National 5 Applications of Mathematics

National 5 Applications of Mathematics is two exam papers worth 90 marks, sat on Monday 26 April 2027. It is the first exam of the 2027 diet, so revision needs to start early.

Exam format

Applications of Mathematics has no coursework. Paper 1 is non-calculator, worth 35 marks and lasts 50 minutes. Paper 2 allows a calculator, worth 55 marks and lasts 1 hour 40 minutes.

Both papers are on Monday 26 April 2027. Paper 1 runs 9:00 to 9:50 and Paper 2 runs 10:30 to 12:10. That is the opening day of the 2027 exam diet.

How it differs from National 5 Maths

This course tests maths used in daily life and work. Questions are set in contexts such as budgeting, planning a job or reading a graph. Most questions need reasoning as well as calculation, so you must interpret the situation and often make a decision.

The course specification groups the content into six skill areas. These are numeracy, finance, statistics, measurement, geometry, and graphical data with probability. About 65% of marks are aimed at grade C.

What examiners look for

Working matters as much as the answer. A clear method earns marks even after an arithmetic error. Where a question asks you to decide or justify, state your conclusion and give the figures that support it.

Lessons from the 2026 course report

Candidates did well with precedence tables, compound percentages and Pythagoras. The report highlighted these weaker areas:

  • calculating gradient with height and distance in different units
  • commission questions where 5% was taken of the wrong amount
  • converting units when using a formula
  • arc length of a quarter circle and area of a half circle
  • percentage profit, often divided by the wrong number
  • comparing the mean and standard deviation of two data sets

The report advised keeping basic number skills sharp for Paper 1. It recommended efficient methods, such as using a multiplier for compound interest rather than working year by year. It also called for plenty of practice with perimeter, area and volume.

Making past papers count

Treat units as part of every answer. Before calculating, convert everything to the same unit. Practise Paper 1 strictly to 50 minutes, because it is short and fast.

Mark past papers with the official marking instructions. Note which marks are for strategy, which for processing and which for communication. Then practise writing the short justifications that earn the final mark.

Revision checklist

Tick topics as you revise. Ticks are saved on this device only.

  • Practise non-calculator percentages, fractions of amounts and time calculations every week.
  • Use a multiplier such as 1.03 cubed for compound interest instead of year-by-year sums.
  • Convert all lengths to one unit before working out a gradient.
  • Learn arc length and sector area, then practise quarter and half circle shapes.
  • Work out percentage profit as profit divided by cost price, then check your divisor.
  • Write comparisons of two data sets that mention both the average and the spread.
  • Complete precedence tables and find the shortest time to finish a task.
  • Practise commission and pay slip questions, checking which amount the percentage applies to.
  • Time Paper 1 at 50 minutes and Paper 2 at 1 hour 40 minutes.
  • Plan revision to peak before 26 April, using the Easter holidays for full timed papers.

Quick answers

When is the National 5 Applications of Maths exam in 2027?

Monday 26 April 2027. Paper 1 runs 9:00 to 9:50 and Paper 2 runs 10:30 to 12:10.

How many marks is National 5 Applications of Maths out of?

90 marks. Paper 1 has 35 marks and Paper 2 has 55 marks. There is no coursework.

Is Applications of Maths easier than National 5 Maths?

It is different rather than easier. It has less abstract algebra but more reasoning in real-life contexts such as finance and planning.

Can I use a calculator?

Only in Paper 2. Paper 1 is non-calculator.
