LEZ checker for Scotland

As a guide, petrol cars and vans registered from 2006 and diesels registered from September 2015 usually meet Scotland's LEZ rules. Confirm with the official check by registration, because the date alone is not proof.

Your result appears hereChoose the vehicle type, fuel and the month it was first registered. Nothing you enter leaves this page.

Is my car LEZ compliant?

Your car is compliant if it meets the minimum Euro emission standard for its fuel. Petrol cars need Euro 4 and diesel cars need Euro 6. Fully electric cars are not restricted.

The same rules apply in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen. A vehicle that passes in one zone passes in all four.

Euro emission standards for Scottish LEZs

Every vehicle is approved to a Euro emission standard. Scotland's LEZ rules set a minimum for each fuel and vehicle type.

VehicleMinimum standard
Petrol cars and vansEuro 4
Diesel cars and vansEuro 6
Petrol buses, coaches and HGVsEuro IV
Diesel buses, coaches and HGVsEuro VI

Cars and vans use ordinary numbers, such as Euro 6. Buses, coaches and HGVs use Roman numerals, such as Euro VI.

LEZ compliant cars: the rule of thumb dates

These dates are a guide only.

VehicleUsually compliant if registered
Petrol cars and vansFrom 2006
Diesel cars and vansFrom September 2015
Buses, coaches and HGVs (Euro VI)From January 2013

Scottish official sources use the same dates for cars and vans. They give no separate date for diesel vans.

Why the registration year is only a guide

Official sources call these dates indicative and tell drivers to use the checker. The date is when the vehicle was first registered. It does not prove which standard the vehicle was built to.

Some vehicles registered before a cut-off date meet the standard. Some registered just after it do not. Our checker gives a likely answer, then points you to the official check.

Scotland LEZ check by registration

The official vehicle emissions check service on gov.scot looks up a UK registration number. It is the reliable answer because it checks the vehicle's own record, not its age.

Know its limits before you rely on it.

  • It does not show whether a vehicle is exempt, such as under a Blue Badge registration.
  • The result may be wrong if the registration number changed in the last 5 years.
  • It does not work for vehicles registered outside the UK.

Non-UK vehicles must still comply. Check the owner's manual, or ask the manufacturer or your national vehicle authority.

If the result looks wrong, email lowemissionzonesenquiries@gov.scot. Include the owner's name and address, and the vehicle's make, model, colour and registration.

Are hybrid cars LEZ compliant?

Hybrids follow the same rules as the petrol or diesel equivalent. A petrol hybrid needs Euro 4 and a diesel hybrid needs Euro 6. Fully electric vehicles are not restricted.

Motorcycles and mopeds

Motorcycles and mopeds are not restricted in any of the four Scottish zones. The 2021 regulations do contain a standard for them, but none of the four schemes applies it.

Older and classic vehicles

A historic vehicle is exempt if it meets all three conditions.

  • It was built, or first registered, at least 30 years ago.
  • It is of a type no longer in production.
  • It is preserved or kept in its original state, with no substantial change to the main components.

This is a rolling 30-year rule. It is not the 40-year rule used for the historic vehicle tax class. Exempt historic vehicles are recognised automatically.

If your older vehicle is not compliant and not exempt, the LEZ Support Fund may help. It covers Euro 3 or older petrol and Euro 5 or older diesel vehicles. The fund is in its final year, 2026/27, and may close sooner if the money runs out.

What happens if you drive in with a non-compliant vehicle

The first PCN is £60, or £30 if paid within 14 days. Each repeat entry in the same zone within 90 days doubles the charge. Cars and vans stop at £480, and buses, coaches, minibuses and HGVs at £960.

Quick answers

Is a petrol car registered before 2006 LEZ compliant?

Often not. Petrol cars that fail Euro 4 are usually registered before 2006. Some earlier cars do meet Euro 4, so check the registration on the official vehicle emissions check service.

Is a 2016 diesel car LEZ compliant in Scotland?

Usually yes. Diesel cars registered from September 2015 generally meet Euro 6. Confirm with the official check by registration before you drive in.

Is there a different LEZ date for diesel vans in Scotland?

No Scottish official source gives one. They apply the same guide to cars and vans: petrol from 2006 and diesel from September 2015. Check the van's registration to be sure.

Are hybrid cars LEZ compliant?

Hybrids follow the rule for the petrol or diesel equivalent. A petrol hybrid needs Euro 4 and a diesel hybrid needs Euro 6.

Does the LEZ checker work for foreign cars?

No. The official checker only works with UK registrations. Non-UK vehicles must still comply, so check the manual or ask the manufacturer or national vehicle authority.

Is a 30 year old car exempt from Scottish LEZs?

It can be. It must be at least 30 years old, of a type no longer made, and kept in original condition. These vehicles are recognised automatically.

What if the LEZ checker gives the wrong result?

Email lowemissionzonesenquiries@gov.scot with the owner's name and address, and the vehicle's make, model, colour and registration.
