What grade is my mark?
Type a total mark to see the grade it would have got.
How the A and C boundaries have moved
Boundaries as a share of the total marks. A lower line means the papers were judged harder that year. Qualifications Scotland publishes boundaries from 2022 in this format.
| Year | Out of | A | B | C | D |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 100 | 72 | 61 | 51 | 40 |
| 2025 | 100 | 73 | 62 | 52 | 41 |
| 2024 | 100 | 72 | 61 | 50 | 39 |
| 2023 | 100 | 70 | 59 | 48 | 37 |
| 2022 | 100 | 72 | 61 | 50 | 39 |
Course structure
The two exam papers make up 70% of the mark and the portfolio makes up 30%. Spoken language is assessed separately and recorded as achieved or not achieved.
In 2027 both papers fall on Monday 10 May. RUAE runs 9:00 to 10:00 and Critical Reading runs 10:30 to 12:00.
RUAE
One unseen non-fiction passage, 30 marks, 1 hour. Questions ask you to explain ideas in your own words and analyse language. Others ask you to evaluate how the writer makes the case.
Critical Reading
Section 1 is the Scottish text: 20 marks on an extract from a set text you studied. Section 2 is a 20-mark critical essay. You pick one question from drama, prose, poetry, film and TV drama, or language.
Portfolio-writing
You submit one piece of up to 1,000 words, broadly creative or broadly discursive. There is no minimum length. The first draft must be written in class under supervision. It is marked out of 15 and the mark is doubled.
What examiners reward
Analysis answers follow a reference plus comment pattern. Pick out the language feature, then explain its effect in context. The 2025 course report repeated that direct lifts from the passage or question gain no marks.
A critical essay needs a line of thought tied to the question. A list of separate points or a set of notes scores poorly. In the Scottish text, references to the text count as much as quotations, especially with longer texts.
Common errors in 2025
The 2025 report noted these common problems:
- RUAE answers that copied the writer's words instead of using own words
- sentence structure answers that offered synonyms rather than analysis
- Scottish text answers quoting from outside the line numbers given
- essays that retold the plot or used a prepared answer that did not fit the question
- personal writing that described events but reflected very little
- discursive pieces built from sources, with little of the writer's own voice
There was good news too. More candidates attempted every RUAE question, and structure questions improved.
Using past papers
Time RUAE strictly to 1 hour, because the clock is tight. For Critical Reading, practise only the Scottish text you studied, and write essays in 45 minutes. Use the marking instructions to see how analysis marks split between reference and comment.
Revise themes and key scenes rather than memorising an essay. Then adapt what you know to the exact question asked.
Revision checklist
Tick topics as you revise. Ticks are saved on this device only.
- Summarise one quality newspaper opinion piece a week in your own words.
- Practise reference plus comment answers on word choice, imagery, sentence structure and tone.
- Learn your Scottish set text well enough to link any extract to the rest of the text.
- Underline the line numbers in every Scottish text question before you answer.
- Revise key scenes, characters and themes for your essay texts, not a memorised essay.
- Write one timed critical essay every fortnight in 45 minutes.
- Open each essay by answering the question directly and keep returning to its key words.
- Draft your portfolio piece early and keep it under 1,000 words.
- In personal writing, add reflection on what you thought, felt and learned.
- In discursive writing, lead with your own argument and use sources only as support.
- Proofread your final portfolio draft for spelling, punctuation and sentence structure.
